Hugo Ball reading the sound poem “Karawane”, June 23, 1916

The Silver Factory embodied the creative energy and free spirit of the sixties. It encouraged collaborative artistic practice through silk screening, pop art and filmmaking. Factory regulars were poets, photographers, painters and musicians, and starred in Warhol’s underground films. It was a huge part of the downtown New York counterculture scene, influencing art and music then and now.
